Elder Abuse

Goal

The Champlain Elder Abuse Response Coalition (CEARC), which is committed to the principle that all seniors have the right to live in a safe environment free of abuse and neglect, guides and supports the development of strategies and services constituting a response to elder abuse in the Champlain LHIN region (Eastern Counties, Ottawa, Renfrew County).

Priorities

  • Continuing to explore sources for sustainable funding to support the three Champlain elder abuse response and referral services
  • Advocating to the LHIN for enhanced funding for the Champlain Senior Crisis Bed Program
  • Monitoring the internal review of the Champlain Elder Abuse Consultation Team
  • Clarifying issues around collection of elder abuse statistics within the Champlain region
  • Continuing to monitor the development of an Elder Law Clinic at the University of Ottawa

Key Accomplishments

  • Initiated, guided and promoted the establishment of the Champlain Elder Abuse Consultation Team
  • Supported the development and growth of the three elder abuse response and referral services in the LHIN region (Cornwall, Ottawa, Renfrew) (View Brochure)
  • Successfully advocated for some sustainable LHIN funding for the Champlain Senior Crisis Bed Program (View Brochure)
  • Developed, with ‘211’, a specialized data collection tool to track their elder abuse calls
  • Supported, promoted and participated in numerous elder abuse education and awareness events for seniors, service providers and the general public across the Champlain region
