Akin is passionate about ensuring that legislation, policy, and services are responsive to the needs of seniors, including newcomers to Canada and individuals from minority backgrounds. In the same vein, he is interested in initiatives aimed at promoting age-friendly cities.
A human geographer by training, Akin holds a Master’s and PhD in the field of geography and has lived and worked across three continents: Africa, Europe, and North America. He is the founder and principal of Hallencourt Strategy, a specialist firm providing grant writing and related services for nonprofit organizations. He is also a consultant providing strong, strategic leadership in areas including community development, healthcare, housing, education, inclusion, and social innovation. Akin previously taught geography at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia.
He lives with his wife and two children in the Ottawa area.
