Biographies:

  • Dr. Amy Hsu is an Investigator at Perley Health, and a Lecturer in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa. She also holds the uOttawa Brain and Mind-Bruyère Health Research Institute Chair in Primary Health Care Dementia Research. Her research uses population-level health administrative data to examine older adults’ health and health care needs, especially in those living with dementia and individuals needing long-term care.
  • Seles Yung is a research coordinator at the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research. She primarily conducts health services research among older adults and those residing in long-term care.

Objective: Anecdotally, there have been reports of changes in the composition and care needs of the LTC population in recent years, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding these changes is crucial to inform health system planning to meet the needs of the future LTC population. In this presentation, we will summarize results from a study using population-level health administrative data to describe changes in the sociodemographic, health, and functional characteristics of residents in publicly-funded LTC homes in Ontario between 2018 and 2023. We will also discuss implications of these findings on the health system, such as projections for LTC demand and training for LTC staff.
