SUMMARY:Southwinds Café - Where Do You Go When You “Gotta Go”?
DESCRIPTION:Where Do You Go When You “Gotta Go”?\nThe Sorry State of Public Toilets in Ottawa \n  \nJoin us for a participatory session about access to public toilets in Ottawa. We all “gotta go” from time to time—whether we’re running errands\, using transit\, or walking in our neighbourhood. And yet\, where are the public toilets one would expect in a major city? \nHow does the absence of this basic facility affect older adults and their ability to participate in public life? How does it affect you? \nWe’ll briefly present the problem and our latest progress\, then open the floor for your stories and questions. With the upcoming municipal election in October\, this is a timely opportunity to bring greater public attention to the issue. \n  \nAbout Elizabeth (Bessa) Whitmore\nRetired Professor of Social Work at Carleton University\, Bessa Whitmore is now a community advocate for the environment\, peace\, public healthcare\, and public toilets. She was one of the original founders of GottaGo! in 2013. She also enjoys the outdoors\, cross-country skiing in the winter\, and swimming in the summer. \n  \nThe session will be approximately one hour\, with 20–30 minutes for the presentation followed by discussion and Q&A. It will take place online on Zoom.

SUMMARY:CarFit Clinic - Richmond
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Priority for residents of Ward 21 – Rideau-Jock \nCarFit is an educational program that provides a quick\, yet comprehensive review of how well you and your vehicle work together. The program also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance your driving safety and increase mobility. \nThe program was initially developed by AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and brought to Canada by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapy (CAOT). \n  \nRecognizing the Need\nOlder adults represent the fastest growing portion of the driving population\, with roughly 2.7 million drivers over the age of 65 on Canadians roads today. Driving today is more difficult than ever\, because of increased traffic congestion\, longer commute distances\, new technology and faster speeds. \nResearch suggests that older drivers are among the safest drivers\, because they are more likely to wear seat belts and less likely to speed or drink and drive. However\, as people age\, they’re more likely to suffer serious injuries or risk death in crashes\, due to greater fragility. \nCommunity mobility is critical for healthy aging\, but ill-fitting vehicles can make it uncomfortable and unsafe to drive. Today’s vehicles have many safety features that offer enhanced restraints and protection\, yet many drivers are unaware of those features or how to best use them. CarFit helps you better understand them and develop strategies to achieve the safest fit.

SUMMARY:Southwinds Café: The First 48 Hours - What Happens When No One Has a Plan
DESCRIPTION:None of us want to think about it. But for the families who’ve lived through those first 48 hours without a plan in place\, they’ll tell you: they wish someone had sat them down beforehand and just walked them through it. \nBecause the clock doesn’t wait for grief. \nWithin hours of a loved one’s passing\, families are faced with decisions they’ve never made before — who to call\, what to sign\, how to notify the government\, and more. \nIt’s not anyone’s fault for not knowing. It’s just that most of us don’t talk about it – until it’s too late. \nJoin funeral director Jason Swan as he walks you through exactly what happens after a death: the people involved\, the decisions that can’t wait (plus the ones that can)\, and what you can do about it today. Jason has guided families through the first 48 hours hundreds of times. He’s seen firsthand what a difference a little preparation makes — and what it costs emotionally and financially when there isn’t any. \nIn this candid\, compassionate conversation\, Jason will let you know: \n\nWhat the first 48 hours actually look like\, step by step\nWho’s involved — and what each of them needs from you\nWhich decisions are time-sensitive\, and what can wait\nWhat can happen when no instructions exist\nWhat a simple\, meaningful plan actually looks like — and how easy it can be to make one\n\nThis isn’t about planning for death. It’s about protecting the people you love from unnecessary pain at the worst possible moment. \nJoin us. Bring someone you care about.

SUMMARY:The Walk of Ages
DESCRIPTION:Count with me. One. Two. Three. We are all three seconds older. Aging is something we all share\, and it connects us all\, no matter our age\, cultural\, ethnic\, political\, or religious background\, or gender and sexual orientation identity. \nThe Walk of Ages is an intergenerational walk fundraiser in Ottawa that brings people together to celebrate and support older adults while recognizing that aging is a shared journey across every stage of life. \nThrough the Walk of Ages\, we take another step toward our vision of a community where older adults are respected\, informed\, and engaged\, living in an age-friendly city. \nOur goal is to shift thinking so that aging is not seen as something that only applies to older adults\, but as a universal experience that connects us all. By doing so\, we aim to break down barriers\, foster understanding\, and encourage everyone to take up the cause of aging together. In doing so\, we strengthen intergenerational connection and build a more inclusive community. \nAt its heart\, the Walk of Ages is about celebrating aging at every stage of life while strengthening the community we all share.
