Financial Considerations

Over a third of caregivers must use their personal finances and savings to pay for the needs of the person they care for. They may have to cut back on their or their family’s spending to do so. Some may need a loan to afford care. Those caring for children and older adults at the same time may have additional financial challenges.

The good news is that there are several financial supports available for caregivers from government agencies and community organizations. You may also be eligible for caregiver benefits and leave.

Capacity-Building Grants for Family Support Networks

Caregiving Benefits and Leave

Caregiver Recognition Benefit for those caring for a Veteran
– financial assistance to support you in caring for a disabled veteran

Federal Government of Canada Benefits Finder
– searches for provincial benefits

Alzheimer Society
– may offer a Caregiver Grant in your area

Labatt Better Together

March of Dimes

The Benefits Wayfinder
– a national charity that works with partners in all sectors to develop and promote financial policies, programs and resources that transform lives and help Canadians to prosper.

Personal Tax Credits (claim on taxes):

The following tax credits are available to you to claim on your personal taxes, if you qualify.

Tax Credits for Family Caregivers
– may qualify if you support a spouse, common-law partner or a dependent with a physical or mental impairment

Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC)
Canada-Wide – You can claim your medical expenses on your personal taxes. Keep receipts and related documents to support your claim.

Basic Personal and Dependent Tax Credits
– everyone can claim the basic personal amount; dependent tax credits may be applied if you are a single adult responsible for the financial care of a relative and are not claiming the spouse/common-law partner credit

The Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
Canada-Wide –  The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a non-refundable tax credit that helps persons with disabilities or their supporting persons reduce the amount of income tax they may have to pay.  An individual may claim the disability amount once they are eligible for the DTC.  To determine if you qualify for the DTC, your doctor must complete the application form and then you submit it to the CRA for review and approval.
