Role in LTC |
Response to COVID-19 |
The City operates four long-term care homes:
Ottawa Public Health (OPH) works in collaboration with long-term care, retirement homes, childcare centres, schools, and other community partners to prevent, identify, report, and manage outbreaks. Under the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA), all outbreaks of respiratory and/or gastroenteritis illness in residents, children, or staff in facilities must be reported to OPH immediately. This includes, but is not limited to, outbreaks caused by COVID-19, common seasonal viruses such as influenza, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and norovirus, even when a causative agent has not been identified. |
Ongoing: Daily active outbreak reporting in healthcare institutions (hospitals, LTC homes, and retirement homes)
March 25: Increased testing capacity in long-term care homes
March 20: Established a Human Services Task Force with partners from City departments, OPH, and representatives from all sectors, including seniors’ services and long-term care
