Topic: Bridging Generations: Fostering Connection between Children and Older Adults in a Long-Term Care Home

Biographies:

  • Kathy Knight Robinson is an RECE and Director of Early Learning and Care Programs at Andrew Fleck Children’s Services. She supports our licensed centre-based childcare centres and our Early ON Child and Family Centre. Kathy is passionate about supporting and building collaborative and trusting relationships between children, families and colleagues. She is excited to add older adults to this ecosystem.
  • Jose Alejandro Fernandez Cruz (RECE, Bach. Early Learning and Community Development) is the Intergenerational Program Coordinator with Andrew Fleck Children’s Services. As part of the Engage at Every Age Intergenerational Child Care Project, he conducts research into the best practices of shared-space intergenerational programming and facilitates the involvement of older adults in program
  • Mehwish Syed is pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences with a Population and Public Health specialization at the University of Ottawa. Under the supervision of Dr. Annie Robitaille, she conducted her honours thesis on “Exploring the Impact of an Intergenerational EarlyON Program.” As part of her research, Mehwish was responsible for evaluating the intergenerational EarlyON program at Perley Health in collaboration with Andrew Fleck Children’s Services.
  • Annie Robitaille, PhD. is an Associate Professor in the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa and holds the Commissionaires Ottawa Research Chair at Centre of Excellence in Frailty-Informed Care™ at Perley Health.

 

Presentation Objectives:

  1. Describe the benefits of connecting children and older adults through purposeful activities in a shared setting
  2. Share lessons learned from cultivating intergenerational community spaces, fostering connection and enrichment
  3. Present program evaluation findings on participant satisfaction, benefits, and areas for improvement
