Secretary

Sandra has held senior management positions in Customer Service and Human Resources across a number of industries and has worked in numerous cities in Canada as well as Texas, California, and Paris, France. 

She obtained her MBA from the Ivey Business School at Western University.  Sandra has previously served on the Boards of Steelbridge Solutions Inc., a Human Resources consulting firm and the Canadian Paraplegic Association Ontario (now Spinal Cord Injury Ontario), and was a founding member of Beaches Speeches in Toronto, a chapter of Toastmasters International. 

A recent transplant to Ottawa, Sandra enjoys Nordic walking, cycling and snowshoeing on the many trails in the area in addition to gardening during the summer months.

President

Alex is a retired federal public service employee.  For the majority of his tenure with the Federal Government he was responsible for various training programs, including managing a national learning program in the National Capital Region that had a focus on improving labour management relations.

Alex, served as Vice President of the Centretown Community Health Centre Board.  In addition, as a Board member for nine (9) years he worked on various initiatives that impacted the diverse community of Centretown and greater Ottawa.

He holds, on MA in Human Systems Intervention from Concordia University, a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University and a Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology from the Flourishing Center of New York.

Past President

Nicole Robert graduated as a registered nurse from the École d’infirmières of the University of Ottawa. She holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing, with a concentration in public hygiene, as well as a Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from the same institution.

Nicole has worked many years in the health sector, more specifically in the mental health sector at the hospital and community levels. She was also the executive director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Community Services of Ottawa for more than two decades. As a member of various local and regional boards and committees, she actively promoted the delivery of services targeted to numerous groups and minorities in a constantly changing environment, collaborating with several partners.

Her professional path has also given her the opportunity to act as a citizen judge, working closely with a multicultural community to defend the principles inherent in Canadian citizenship.

Now a retiree, Nicole pursues her work as a capacity assessor at the Capacity Assessment Office of the Ministry of the Attorney General. She is also a member of the Council on Aging, an organization focused on building an “age-friendly city”.

Nicole has many hobbies: she plays tennis, golf and bridge, attends a reading club and likes cross-country skiing. In a nutshell, she is a very busy woman, as well as a loving grandmother.

Treasurer

Chandra is a CPA, CGA, and holds a B.Comm (Hons) degree in Public Policy and Public Finance Management from the University of Ottawa and also a B.Comm (Hons) degree in Accounting.  Chandra has been a dedicated volunteer since she came to Canada from the UK in 1981. She has volunteered preparing income tax returns for seniors, students, newcomers, and those with low income. Chandra has held several board positions and has acted as treasurer and volunteer auditor for numerous organizations.  She has served on the selection committees for the Prime Ministers’ Award for Teaching Excellence and the Carol Thompson Memorial Fund Scholarship for students with learning disabilities.  She is a founding director of the Sri Lanka Association of Manitoba and the Association for New Canadians in St. John’s. More recently, she is a founding organizer of the seniors’ group providing services to Sri Lankan Canadian seniors which is supported by the Social Planning Council of Ottawa.  Chandra has worked in the charitable sector as a controller and director of finance and for two crown corporations as an internal auditor.  She was the winner of the 2019 Seniors Volunteer Ottawa - VOscar award which was presented by Volunteer Ottawa to a senior citizen who made a meaningful impact on the community with outstanding volunteer efforts

Treasurer

A former teacher and dietitian, Trèva Cousineau has devoted herself to the advancement and protection of the” francophonie” at the local, provincial, national and even international levels for more than 50 years. She has served as counsel, coordinator and director of many franco-ontarien and French Canadian organizations, such as President of the provincial ACFO, Chair of the Ontario School Trustees’ Council and Executive Director of the National Federation of the French language school boards (FNCSF). While Vice-President of Richelieu International and Administrator of the local district, she was responsible for the sponsorship of the six first Monuments de la francophonie d’Ottawa. She was President of the Committee for the Monument at Ottawa University, her alma mater. She is Vice-President of the Centre de la francophonie des Amériques, President of MIFO and President of Dialogue Canada since 2011.

Chair, Volunteer

Carol Clemenhagen is a retired health care executive. She was the first female President & CEO of the Canadian Hospital Association and was Executive Director of the Medical Research Council of Canada (now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research). Carol holds a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Ottawa and a bachelor of arts degree in political science & sociology from Carleton University. Born in Buckingham, Québec, she lives in Ottawa’s Civic Hospital neighbourhood and volunteers with the Environment Committee of the Civic Hospital Neighbourhood Association.

Chair, Resource Development

Brian Tardif’s career experience in community service organizations, spanning 42 years, has been broad and exceptionally varied. Over the years, he has developed superior skills in the areas of leadership, financial and human resources management, administration, governance, fund-raising, communicating, negotiating, networking and facilitating.

Committed to excellence, he has embraced change and worked closely with Boards of Directors to effectively manage the operations of high caliber community service organizations. In addition, Brian has done consultancy work for over 25 local, national and international community service organizations.

He is the recipient of numerous awards of recognition.   As alumni of Carleton University, Brian holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work.  His is also an alumnus of St. Mary’s and Dalhousie Universities in Halifax. Retired after 33 years as Executive Director of Citizen Advocacy Ottawa, he continues to provide consultancy work and is currently a volunteer with Compassionate Ottawa. 

Member at Large

Patrick Curran has managed organizations that require change management and innovative solutions. He has served as the National Executive Director for Independent Living Canada and has worked for Statistics Canada permitting him to visit Northern Ontario First Nation reserves.

Patrick’s career has enabled the transfer of his knowledge and experience for the benefit of private, public, and non-government organizations (NGOs). He worked more than a decade for the City of Ottawa responsible for marketing transit fares in excess of $100 million. Patrick implemented the popular Taxi Coupon program and helped implement the multifaceted electronic fare system, PRESTO®.

Patrick worked for many years as Marketing Manager for Ontario’s largest credit union. In addition to participating in several entrepreneurial endeavors himself (Hallmark and InfoMET®), Patrick has proven particularly adept in the areas of Strategic Partnerships, Project Management, and Finance.

Chair, Committee Development

Miriam Fry has recently left her position after 6 years as the executive director of Families Matter Co-operative, a family support organization for those supporting loved ones with developmental disabilities.   Appropriate supported housing is one of the key concerns of these families.  Miriam was one of the authors of “Ending the Wait” which led to the province’s Innovative Housing Task Force.  Before that, Miriam spent over 25 years at the CBC, as a journalist and a journalistic manager.

Miriam is the president of Ottawa Carleton Lifeskills, an organization that provides housing and support for adults with disabilities.  She sits on the advisory committee of Doors Open Ottawa and has been a long-time volunteer English language tutor for newcomers.

Health Issues Committee Chair

Michele began her role with the COA in September 2021 and will work closely with the Board and leadership team.

Michele is an active community member, currently serving as a Board Director with Ottawa Community Housing and she is heavily involved with Ottawa Special Olympics sports programs in a coaching capacity. Michele is a retired Assistant Deputy Minister who has a background in Health Administration. She led the delivery of Health Services (psychiatric hospitals, mental health clinics, physical health clinics, dental) in prisons across Canada through a team of 1600 health professionals.   

Co-Chair, Age-Friendly Housing Committee

Mary Appleton has had a variety of careers starting in national amateur sport organizations, to marketing for an Ottawa home health agency, to managing a coalition of national organizations promoting vaccination, and lastly working with vaccine researchers in Halifax, NS. Mary retired back to Ottawa because of family and long-standing connections, but she misses the mild Halifax winters. She joined the Age-Friendly Housing Committee five years ago, looking for older adult housing options, and discovered everyone else on the Committee was also looking for options as we age. Mary enjoys the variety of people on the Housing Committee who bring a wide assortment of experiences and expertise to discussions. 

Age-Friendly Housing Committee Co-Chair

Jenny Brooks was a Critical Care and Emergency Nurse for many years, before becoming a full-time professor at Algonquin College teaching these same specialties.  She returned to university in 2000 to earn her Nurse Practitioner credential.  Jenny worked in several First Nation communities in Nunavut and Northern Ontario before accepting a full-time Nurse Practitioner position in Family Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital.  Her clinical practice included all age groups with a special focus on and interest in older adults.  Upon retirement in 2016, she joined the COA Age-Friendly Housing Committee to continue her work of improving the health of Ottawa seniors by advocating for socially inclusive, supportive, and innovative housing options. Jenny is also the Lead of the NORC- SSP (Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities-Supportive Service Program) Working Group.

Co-Chair, Pedestrian Safety and Walkability sub-committee

Mary has been a Physiotherapist for over 35 years in a variety of areas and has extensive experience in geriatrics. She helped get the Champlain Falls Assessment Streamlined Treatment (CFAST) Clinic up and running as their first physiotherapist.

She is passionate about fall prevention, prevention of deconditioning in older adults, and helping seniors maintain their independence. She has had the opportunity to do many presentations on fall prevention to community groups and looks forward to using her background experiences while working with the COA’s Pedestrian Safety and Walkability sub-committee.

Chair, Income Security

Bob Baldwin is an Ottawa-based consultant who has worked on pension issues for more than 30 years. He worked for the Canadian Labour Congress for all but three years from 1976 to 2005 – the last 10 as the Director of Social and Economic Policy.

Baldwin was a member of the expert panel that advised the Ontario Expert Commission on Pensions and he prepared a research report for the Government of Ontario on the retirement income prospects of Canadians as part of the federal, provincial and territorial dialogue among Ministers of Finance on this issue.

Baldwin is a Director of Addenda Capital and Tradex Management Incorporated, he chairs the Board of Trustees of the Canada Wide Industrial Pension Plan, he is an advisor to the National Pension Hub of the Global Risk Institute, he is Chair of the C.D. Howe Institute’s Pension Policy Council and has been a member of the Expert Panel on Income Security of the Ottawa Council on Aging for many years.

Chair, Rural Transportation Sub-committee

Ken lives near Fitzroy Harbour in West Carleton ward. He retired in 1992 after a 30-year career in the Canadian Forces as a senior Military Engineering officer who served in command and staff appointments in Operations, Training, and Equipment and Construction Project Management.

Ken graduated as a Chemical Engineer from the University of New Brunswick and completed post-graduate work with the US Army and the Royal Military College of Science. He commanded Canada’s combat engineering regiment in Germany and served with NATO’s Central Army Group Headquarters in Heidelberg. Ken was a member of the Directing Staff of the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College and commanded the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering.

Since retirement, Ken has pursued his interest in Canadian military history and has published several books on military engineering history and heritage. He also assists aspiring authors with their research and writing. He is the Past President of the Canadian Military Engineers Association and has been on their national executive for 30 years.

Ken has been involved in municipal affairs for more than two decades. He focuses on Rural Affairs, Seniors, Transportation, and Communication. Ken has worked to improve a wide variety of the City of Ottawa’s activities – particularly through the Community Budget Advisory Team and the Rural Summits. He is a member of the Seniors Round Table, Council on Aging, Ottawa Seniors Transportation Committee, Making Voices Count/Citizens Engagement Table, West Carleton Advisory Committee, the Rural Transportation Solutions project, and the city’s Master Plans Ambassadors Working Group.

Older Drivers

Soon after attending a Council on Aging seminar titled Shifting Gears, organized by the Ottawa Seniors Transportation Committee (OSTC) in 2014, Louise joined this active volunteer committee.  

OSTC was divided into several sub-committees that represented different areas of interest to Ottawa seniors including; Rural Transportation, Public Transit, Hospital Parking, Pedestrian Safety, Older Drivers and Community Information. Representatives from several city and community organizations volunteered their time to advocate for positive change to transportation issues affecting seniors and those with mobility challenges.

As a bilingual occupational therapist, Louise brought important knowledge, professionalism and a keen interest in reaching out to the senior community across Ottawa.  Her special interest has been in promoting practical programs, and providing important information to improve driving safety.  With an aging demographic and driving as the major form of transportation for many older adults, she found an important niche and created an excellent program.  

She agreed to chair the Older Drivers sub-committee in 2015.  Since that time, she has worked hard to bring the 55-Alive program to many seniors and has become the first person to be certified to provide this program in French in the Ottawa area.  Her passion was instrumental to the launching of the local CarFit initiative which has been active for the past two years.  Louise has become well known in the community for her ability to collaborate with a wide range of city and community organizations and is greatly respected amongst volunteers because of her caring and supporting nature and her ability to organize and lead events.  These relationships have been a tremendous asset in bringing current information and practical driving tips to older drivers across Ottawa through brochures, a series of driving tips for older adults and numerous community educational events. 

Over the past number of years, Louise has made an incredible contribution to the community in the field of road safety for older adults. The Council on Aging is delighted to name Louise Brunelle as the recipient of the 2020 Margaret Griffiths Award.    

Chair, Men’s Breakfast Planning Committee

George Hartsgrove is a retired single gay male, originally from Brantford ON, who spent most of his career in Ottawa.  Soon after arriving in Ottawa to work at Carleton University, George began to volunteer for several LGBTQ organizations, which quickly became a passion during his life. In 1986 George took a bold leap and bought a large house on Frank Street to set up a Bed and Breakfast while continuing to work in the research community at the University of Ottawa. In 1993, George was asked to come work for the fledgling LGBTQ newspaper, Capital XTRA as the advertising sales manager.  In 2007, George decided to slow down by leaving the B&B business to become a Mortgage Agent until early 2017 when he retired.  A tireless community activist, he continues to participate in numerous volunteer endeavors. He is very active with the Ottawa Senior Pride Network with the Housing and Social Spaces Committee, is past chair of the Social Inclusion Committee at the Council on Ageing, and presently is a member of the Age Friendly Housing Committee. He also helps newcomers to Canada as a member of the Northern Lights Refuge. In his spare time, George likes to get out for a ride on his motorcycle.   

Pedestrian Safety and Walkability Sub-Committee

Min grew up in Ottawa and recently returned after many years of living abroad. She has previously worked in mental health outreach for a non-profit organization in Japan and volunteered for their English language TELL Lifeline. Min believes strongly in the many physical, mental, social (and financial!) benefits of walking, and is excited to work on Pedestrian Safety and Walkability to help people from “all walks of life”. She is a caregiver to her parents and remembers the frustrations of pushing a baby stroller in winter, so she is excited to join CoA and find solutions that benefit everyone.

Président

Maintenant à la retraite, Alex Roussakis a consacré l’entièreté de sa carrière à la fonction publique fédérale et une majeure partie de celle-ci à la direction de programmes de formation divers. Il a notamment administré un programme d’apprentissage national dans la région de la capitale nationale, lequel avait pour objectif d’améliorer les relations syndicat-patronat.

Alex a en outre été vice président du conseil d’administration du Centre de santé communautaire du Centre-Ville. Ayant été administrateur de l’organisme pendant neuf ans, il a œuvré à de nombreuses initiatives qui ont entraîné des retombées sur la communauté diversifiée du centre ville d’Ottawa et de la grande région de la capitale.

Alex est titulaire d’une maîtrise en systèmes d’intervention auprès des personnes de l’Université Concordia, d’un certificat d’études supérieures en mentorat pour cadres de l’Université Royal Roads et d’un certificat en psychologie positive appliquée du Flourishing Center, situé à New York.

Présidente sortante

Nicole Robert est une infirmière autorisée, graduée de l’école des infirmières de l’Hôpital général d’Ottawa. Elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en sciences infirmières avec concentration en hygiène publique et une maîtrise en administration des affaires (MBA) de l’Université d’Ottawa.

Elle a œuvré durant plusieurs années dans le domaine de la santé, plus spécifiquement dans le domaine de la santé mentale au niveau hospitalier et communautaire. Pendant plus de vingt ans, elle a occupé le poste de directeure générale des Services communautaires de géronto-psychiatrie d’Ottawa. Membres de plusieurs conseils d’administration et de comités locaux et régionaux, elle a su promouvoir avec dynamisme la prestation de services visant différents groupes et cultures dans un environnement en évolution constante, en collaboration avec plusieurs partenaires.

Son cheminement lui a également permis d’être juge de la citoyenneté, ce qui lui a permis de travailler étroitement avec la communauté multiculturelle afin de promouvoir les principes inhérents à la citoyenneté canadienne. À la retraite, elle continue son travail d’évaluatrice désignée de la capacité du Bureau de l’évaluation de la capacité, ministère du Procureur général.

Elle continue d’être au sein du Conseil sur le vieillissement, un organisme ayant pour vision “ville amie des aînés”. Nicole a beaucoup de passetemps, soit le tennis, le golf, le ski de fonds, le club de lecture, le bridge et autres. En résumé, une femme très occupée tout en étant une grand-maman attentionnée.

Vice-Présidente

Trèva Cousineau œuvre depuis 50 ans pour la défense et la promotion de la francophonie aux niveaux local, provincial, national et même international. Elle a joué un rôle de conseil, de coordination et de gestion au sein de plusieurs organismes franco-ontariens et franco-canadiens, dont la présidence de l’ACFO provinciale, de l’AFCSO et la direction générale de la FNCSF.

A titre de vice-présidente du Richelieu International et administrateure du District des fondateurs, elle a été responsable du parrainage des premiers Monuments de la francophonie d’Ottawa. Elle a présidé le comité du monument à l’Université d’Ottawa, son Alma mater; elle siège au CA du Centre de la francophonie des Amériques depuis 2010 et depuis mai, à titre de vice-présidente; elle est présidente du MIFO et présidente de Dialogue Canada depuis 2011.

En 2014, en reconnaissance de son engagement et de son dévouement, Trèva a été décorée de l’Ordre des francophones d’Amérique décerné par le Conseil supérieur de la langue française.

Sandra a occupé des postes de haute direction de service à la clientèle et de ressources humaines dans plusieurs secteurs industriels et dans de nombreuses villes du Canada, aux États-Unis le Texas et la Californie et à Paris en France.

Présidente, Bénévoles

Carol Clemenhagen est une ancienne cadre du secteur des soins de santé maintenant à la retraite. Elle a été la première femme présidente et chef de la direction de l’Association canadienne des soins de santé et a aussi été directrice exécutive du Conseil de recherches médicales du Canada (maintenant les Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada). Carol détient une maîtrise en administration de la santé de l’Université d’Ottawa et un baccalauréat ès arts en sciences politiques et sociologie de l’Université Carleton. Originaire de Buckingham (Québec), elle vit dans le quartier de l’Hôpital Civic d’Ottawa et agit comme bénévole au sein du comité sur l’environnement de l’association du quartier de l’Hôpital Civic.

Chair, Resource Development

Au cours de sa carrière, de plus de 42 ans, Brian Tardif accumule au sein de nombreuses organisations communautaires une expérience considérable et variée. Au cours des années, il acquiert des compétences uniques dans les secteurs suivants : leadership, gestion financière, ressources humaines, administration, gouvernance, collecte de fonds, communication, négociation, réseautage et médiation.

Visant l’excellence, il prône le changement et collabore avec les conseils d’administration d’organismes communautaires de haut niveau pour gérer efficacement leurs activités. En outre, Brian agit comme expert-conseil auprès de plus de 25 organisations locales, nationales, et internationales dans le secteur du service communautaire. Il détient de nombreux prix de reconnaissance.

Il est titulaire d’une maîtrise en travail social de l’Université Carleton, en plus d’avoir aussi fait des études à l’Université St. Mary et l’Université Dalhousie à Halifax. Retraité après avoir exercé pendant 33 ans La fonction de directeur général de Citizen Advocacy Ottawa, il continue à agir comme conseiller et travaille actuellement comme bénévole auprès de Compassionate Ottawa.

Présidente, Éducation

Miriam Fry a récemment quitté son poste de directrice générale à la Families Matter Co operative après avoir assumé ces fonctions pendant six ans. L’organisme, qui apporte du soutien aux familles s’occupant de proches atteints d’une déficience intellectuelle, répond à l’une des principales préoccupations de ces familles, à savoir l’accès à un logement subventionné adéquat.

Miriam a coécrit le rapport Ending the Wait, qui a mené à la création du Groupe de travail sur le logement des Services de l’Ontario pour les personnes ayant une déficience intellectuelle. Elle avait auparavant travaillé plus de 25 ans à la SRC en tant que journaliste et gestionnaire.

Miriam est actuellement présidente de l’entreprise Ottawa Carleton Lifeskills Inc., qui fournit soutien et logement à des adultes handicapés. Elle siège en outre au comité consultatif de Portes ouvertes Ottawa et travaille bénévolement depuis longtemps comme tutrice en anglais auprès des nouveaux arrivants.

Membre en général

Patrick Curran a géré des organismes nécessitant une gestion des changements et des solutions novatrices. Il a été directeur général national de Vie autonome Canada; il a aussi travaillé pour Statistique Canada, ce qui lui a donné l’occasion de visiter des réserves des Premières nations dans le nord de l’Ontario.

Durant sa carrière, Patrick a pu transférer ses connaissances et son expérience au profit d’organismes privés, publics et non gouvernementaux (ONG). Durant sa décennie comme employé de la Ville d’Ottawa, il a été responsable du marketing des titres de transport en commun d’une valeur supérieure à 100 millions de dollars. Patrick a mis en œuvre le populaire Programme de coupons de taxi et contribué à la mise en place du système de paiement électronique à volets multiples PRESTO®.

Il a aussi travaillé pendant de nombreuses années comme gestionnaire du marketing pour la plus grande coopérative de crédit de l’Ontario. En plus de participer lui-même à plusieurs initiatives commerciales (Hallmark et InfoMET®), il s’est révélé particulièrement habile dans les domaines des partenariats stratégiques, de la gestion de projets et des finances.

Présidente, Comité de la santé

Le CSV a le plaisir d’annoncer la nomination de Michele Brenning au poste de présidente, Comité de la santé. Michele a commencé sa carrière au CSV en septembre 2021 et elle travaillera en étroite collaboration avec le conseil d’administration et l’équipe de direction.

Michele participe activement à la vie de la collectivité. Elle est actuellement directrice au conseil de Logement communautaire d’Ottawa et est très impliquée dans les programmes des Olympiques spéciaux d’Ottawa comme entraîneuse. Avant de prendre sa retraite, elle a été sous-ministre adjointe avec des antécédents en administration de la santé. Elle a été responsable de la prestation des services de santé (hôpitaux psychiatriques, cliniques de santé mentale, cliniques de santé physique, services dentaires) dans les établissements pénitentiaires à l’échelle du Canada par l’entremise d’une équipe de 1 600 professionnels de la santé.

Mary Appleton a un parcours professionnel varié. Après avoir commencé au sein d’organismes nationaux de sport amateur, elle s’est occupée du marketing pour une agence de soins à domicile d’Ottawa, a ensuite géré une coalition d’organismes nationaux prônant la vaccination, pour finalement travailler avec des chercheurs en vaccins à Halifax (N.-É.). Une fois à la retraite, Mary est revenue à Ottawa en raison de liens familiaux et de longue date, même si les hivers doux d’Halifax lui manquent. Elle s’est jointe au comité sur le Logement ami-des-aînés il y a cinq ans afin d’explorer les options de logement pour les personnes aînées découvrant du coup que tous les autres membres s’y trouvaient pour la même raison. Mary apprécie la diversité des personnes qui composent ce comité et qui enrichissent les discussions par l’éventail de leurs expériences et de leur expertise.

Jenny Brooks a été infirmière en soins critiques et d’urgence avant de devenir professeure à temps plein au Collège Algonquin, où elle a enseigné les mêmes spécialités. Elle est retournée aux études en 2000 pour obtenir son titre de compétences comme infirmière praticienne. Jenny a travaillé dans plusieurs collectivités des Premières Nations au Nunavut et dans le Nord de l’Ontario avant d’accepter un poste d’infirmière praticienne à temps plein en médecine familiale à l’Hôpital d’Ottawa. Sa pratique clinique incluait tous les groupes d’âge, mais avec une concentration et un intérêt particuliers à l’égard des aînés. Au moment de sa retraite, en 2016, elle s’est jointe au comité du Logement ami-des-aînés pour poursuivre son travail visant à améliorer la santé des personnes aînées à Ottawa en prônant des options d’appui novatrices et socialement inclusives pour ce groupe de la population.

Valerie Wright est à la retraite après avoir été enseignante et directrice d’école au Ottawa Catholic School Board. Elle siège au comité du Logement ami-des-aînés du Conseil sur le vieillissement, au sein duquel elle a joué un rôle clé au cours des deux dernières années. Elle prône l’éducation dans le contexte du développement au sein du Mouvement de soutien des grands-mères et œuvre aussi auprès des réfugiés et nouveaux-arrivants à Ottawa.

Valerie Wright is a retired teacher/principal from the Ottawa Catholic School Board. She is a member of the Council on Aging’s Age Friendly Housing Committee, in which she has played a key role in the last two year. She advocates for education in development with the Grandmother’s Advocacy Network and for newcomers/refugees to Ottawa.

Bob Baldwin est un expert-conseil d’Ottawa qui a travaillé dans le domaine des pensions pendant plus de 30 ans. De 1976 à 2005, sauf pendant trois ans, il a travaillé pour le Congrès du travail du Canada où, au cours des dix dernières années, il a été directeur, Politique économique et sociale.

Baldwin a fait partie du groupe d’experts qui a conseillé la Commission d’experts en régimes de retraite de l’Ontario. Il a rédigé pour le gouvernement de cette province un rapport de recherche sur les perspectives de revenu de retraite des Canadiens dans le cadre du dialogue fédéral-provincial-territorial des ministres des Finances sur cette question.

Baldwin est administrateur auprès d’Addenda Capital et Tradex Management Incorporated, préside le conseil de fiduciaires du Régime transcanadien de retraite, en plus d’agir comme conseiller auprès du National Pension Hub du Global Risk Institute et d’être président du Pension Policy Council de l’Institut C.D. Howe. Il fait aussi partie, depuis de nombreuses années, du groupe d’experts sur la sécurité du revenu du Conseil sur le vieillissement d’Ottawa.

Il a siégé au conseil d’administration de PSP Investments, été membre et président du conseil consultatif du Régime de pensions du Canada, ainsi que membre du Conseil des normes actuarielles. M. Baldwin est l’auteur de nombreux documents de recherche sur les pensions et est fréquemment invité à intervenir à des conférences et à donner des conseils en matière de pensions aux divers paliers de gouvernement et aux responsables de régimes de pensions.

Coprésidente du sous-comité sur le potentiel piétonnier en fonction de l’âge et la sécurité des piétons

Mary Haller a été physiothérapeute pendant plus de 35 ans dans divers contextes et possède une longue expérience en gériatrie. Elle a contribué à lancer la « Champlain Falls Assessment Streamlined Treatment Clinic (CFAST) » , dont elle a été la première physiothérapeute.

La prévention des chutes et du déconditionnement chez les personnes âgées. ainsi que les mesures permettant à ces dernières de maintenir leur autonomie sont des questions qui lui tiennent à cœur. Elle a eu l’occasion de faire de nombreuses présentations sur la prévention des chutes devant des groupes communautaires et elle est impatiente de faire appel à son expérience vécue dans son travail auprès du Comité sur le potentiel piétonnier en fonction de l’âge et la sécurité des piétons.

Président, Sous-comité du transport rural

Ken vit près de Fitzroy Harbour à West Carleton. Il a pris sa retraite il y a 30 ans après une carrière de 30 ans comme officier ingénieur principal dans les Forces canadiennes. Il a occupé des postes de commandement et d’état-major dans les Opérations, la Formation, l’Équipement et la Gestion de projets de construction.

Ken est diplômé en génie chimique de l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick et a poursuivi des études supérieures auprès de l’US Army et du Royal Military College of Science. Il a été commandant du régiment du génie de combat du Canada en Allemagne et il a servi auprès du Quartier général du Groupe d’armées du centre de l’OTAN à Heidelberg. Ken a été membre du personnel d’instruction du Collège d’état-major et de commandement des Forces canadiennes et a commandé l’École de génie militaire des FC.

Depuis sa retraite, Ken a poursuivi son intérêt pour l’histoire militaire canadienne et a publié plusieurs livres sur l’histoire et le patrimoine du génie militaire. Il aide également des aspirants auteurs dans leurs recherches et leur rédaction. Il est président sortant de l’Association du génie militaire canadien, dont il fait partie de l’exécutif national depuis 30 ans.

Ken s’occupe d’affaires municipales depuis plus de deux décennies, se concentrant sur les questions rurales, les aînés, le transport et les communications. Il s’est employé à améliorer une grande variété d’activités de la Ville d’Ottawa, notamment par le truchement de l’équipe consultative sur le budget communautaire et les sommets ruraux. Il est membre de la Table ronde des aînés, du Comité du transport du Conseil sur le vieillissement, de Faire compter les voix / Table pour l’engagement civique et du Comité consultatif de West Carleton, le projet Rural Transportation Solutions », en plus de représenter les régions rurales auprès du Groupe de travail des ambassadeurs de la ville.

Older Drivers

Peu après avoir assisté à un séminaire du Conseil sur le vieillissement intitulé Atelier pour conducteurs âgés, organisé par le Comité du transport des aînés d’Ottawa (CTAO) en 2014, Mme Brunelle s’est jointe à ce comité de bénévoles actif.

Le CTAO a été subdivisé en plusieurs sous-comités qui représentaient différents domaines d’intérêt pour les aînés d’Ottawa, notamment le transport rural, le transport en commun, le stationnement à l’hôpital, la sécurité des piétons, les conducteurs âgés et l’information communautaire. Des représentants de plusieurs organismes municipaux et communautaires ont donné de leur temps pour favoriser un changement positif aux problèmes de transport touchant les aînés et les personnes à mobilité réduite.

À titre d’ergothérapeute bilingue, Mme Brunelle a apporté d’importantes connaissances au Comité, a fait preuve d’un grand professionnalisme et d’un vif intérêt pour la communauté des aînés à Ottawa. Elle était particulièrement désireuse de promouvoir des programmes pratiques et de fournir des renseignements importants pour améliorer la sécurité routière. Étant donné le vieillissement de la population et le fait que de nombreux adultes âgés utilisent principalement la voiture pour se déplacer, elle a trouvé un créneau important et a créé un excellent programme.

Mme Brunelle a accepté de présider le sous-comité des conducteurs aînés en 2015. Depuis, elle a travaillé d’arrache-pied pour offrir le programme 55 ans au volant à de nombreux aînés et est devenue la première personne certifiée à l’offrir en français dans la région d’Ottawa. Sa passion a joué un rôle déterminant dans le lancement de l’initiative locale AutoAjuste, qui est en place depuis deux ans. Mme Brunelle est bien connue dans la collectivité pour sa capacité de collaborer avec un large éventail d’organismes municipaux et communautaires. De plus, elle est très respectée parmi les bénévoles en raison de sa nature bienveillante et encourageante ainsi que de sa capacité d’organiser et de diriger des activités. Ces relations ont été un atout extraordinaire pour ce qui est de fournir aux conducteurs âgés d’Ottawa des renseignements à jour et des conseils pratiques en matière de conduite grâce à des brochures, à une série de conseils et à de nombreuses activités éducatives communautaires.

Au cours des dernières années, Mme Brunelle a apporté une contribution remarquable à la collectivité dans le domaine de la sécurité routière pour les personnes âgées. Le Conseil sur le vieillissement est ravi de décerner le prix Margaret Griffiths 2020 à Louise Brunelle.

Président, Comité de planification des petits-déjeuners des hommes

George Hartsgrove est un célibataire gai à la retraite, originaire de Brantford (Ontario), dont presque toute la carrière s’est déroulée à Ottawa. Peu après son arrivée dans la capitale, pour travailler à l’Université Carleton, George a commencé à faire du bénévolat auprès de plusieurs organismes LGBTQ, ce qui est rapidement devenu sa passion. En 1986, il a pris la décision audacieuse d’acheter une grande maison sur la rue Frank en vue d’établir un gite offrant chambre et petit-déjeuner tout en continuant à travailler dans le milieu de la recherche à l’Université d’Ottawa. En 1993, George a été invité à travailler pour le nouveau journal de la communauté LGBTQ, Capital XTRA, comme gestionnaire des ventes de publicité. En 2007, il a décidé de ralentir en se défaisant du gite pour devenir un agent de prêts hypothécaires, fonction qu’il a exercée jusqu’au début de 2017, moment de son départ à la retraite. Activiste communautaire infatigable, il continue à participer à de nombreuses initiatives bénévoles. Il participe très activement au Réseau Fierté des aîné(e)s d’Ottawa, notamment au sein du Comité du logement et des espaces sociaux; il est aussi ancien président du Comité de l’inclusion sociale du Conseil sur le vieillissement et siège actuellement au Comité du logement adapté à l’âge. Il aide aussi les nouveaux arrivants au Canada en tant que membre du Northern Lights Refuge. Durant ses loisirs, George aime prendre la route sur sa moto.

Coprésidentes du Groupe de travail sur le potentiel piétonnier en fonction de l’âge et la sécurité des piétons

Min Ku, qui a grandi à Ottawa, y est revenue récemment après avoir vécu de nombreuses années à l’étranger. Elle a travaillé dans les services d’approche en santé mentale pour un organisme sans but lucratif au Japon et a fait du bénévolat pour la ligne de soutien téléphonique TELL Lifeline en anglais. Min croit fermement dans les nombreux avantages physiques, mentaux, sociaux (et financiers!) de la marche et est emballée de travailler dans le domaine du potentiel piétonnier en fonction de l’âge et de la sécurité des piétons pour aider des personnes de toutes les couches de la société. Comme elle agit à titre soignante auprès de ses parents et se souvient très bien des frustrations d’utiliser une poussette l’hiver, il lui tarde de travailler au sein du CSV pour trouver des solutions qui avantagent tout le monde.

Président, Comité du transport

À titre de directeur général des programmes au Conseil canadien de la sécurité à Ottawa (2006 to 2020), Raynald a été responsable de l’élaboration du curriculum et de la gestion des programmes de formation du Conseil, ainsi que des campagnes nationales de sensibilisation, du comité d’examen des collisions du CCS, des entrevues avec les médias et des allocutions publiques. Raynald a siégé à de nombreux comités nationaux sur la sécurité tant comme membre que comme président ou vice-président.

Après avoir obtenu un diplôme de CEGEP de deux ans en sciences humaines, Raynald a poursuivi ses études en psychologie à l’Université de Victoria (C.-B.), où il a obtenu un B.A. avec majeure en psychologie. La psychologie du comportement a été sa passion, centrée sur les manières de modifier le comportement humain pour améliorer la sécurité et prévenir les blessures et décès. Raynald détient aussi un certificat en études de gestion du Collège Algonquin.

Depuis 32 ans, Raynald vit dans le quartier d’Ottawa-Sud, où sa femme Brenda et lui ont élevé leurs deux enfants.

Transportation Committee Chair

Raynald was the General Manager of Programs (2006 to 2020) for the Canada Safety Council (CSC) in Ottawa. He was responsible for the curriculum development and management of the Council’s training programs, national awareness campaigns, CSC collision review committee, media interviews, and public speaking. Raynald sat on many national safety committees as a committee member and chair or Co-Chair.

After he received a two-year diploma in Human Sciences from CEGEP, he pursued his studies in Psychology at the University of Victoria, BC where he received his BA with a major in Psychology. Behavioral psychology has been his passion learning how he could modify human behavior in order to improve safety and prevent injuries and deaths. Raynald also received a certificate in management studies from Algonquin College.

Raynald has been living in Ottawa South for the past 32 years where he and his wife Brenda raised their two children.

Yves Leduc graduated from the University of Montreal. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics (M.Sc.) specializing in public finance and international trade. Yves is a dynamic, engaged, and dedicated senior executive with more than 25 years of experience in the associative world/lobbying promoting and defending the interests of farmers, notably the Dairy Farmers of Canada. His expertise and experience in facilitating, advocating and influencing the development of acceptable consensus in a highly politicized and complex environment, both domestically and internationally, represent a strong asset for the Council on Aging.  Yves also has extensive experience working with a multidisciplinary staff, and has developed strong relationships with elected officials, senior officials and political staff. Yves lives in the downtown area with his wife Pascale and their young daughter LiCan-Marie.

Sarah has been with the Council on Aging since 2014.  She brings with her 30+ years of experience in the fields of aging and later life.  She has worked in the fields of elder abuse and seniors’ community housing, has spent eight years in management roles with the Canadian Association on Gerontology, and has spent the last 20 years as a consultant, speaking and writing on the lifestyle aspects of retirement and aging.  Sarah has a BA in Psychology and an MA in Clinical Counselling, both with a focus on later life issues. Sarah has a passion for aging issues and enjoys working with and for seniors in Ottawa in identifying the ongoing opportunities available to improve the lives of seniors in the community and make Ottawa a more age-friendly city.

Bonnie Schroeder, MSW, RSW: Bonnie is a registered social worker with over 25 years of experience working with seniors and their caregivers in the mental health, home and community care, and public health sectors.

Before joining the Council on Aging in 2016, Bonnie was the National Director of the Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health (2013-2016) and spent over twelve years at VON Canada in a variety of management roles including the last five years as the Director of Caregiving. Bonnie is a Part-time Professor at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Social Work (Minor in Aging Studies) and at Carleton University, School of Social Work.

Roch is a bilingual professional who has 30 years’ experience working with numerous national non-profit membership-based organizations in sports, education, tourism and government. He has a varied background having worked in membership and customer service, sponsorship and partnership development as well as, marketing and communications positions. He has worked hand in hand with volunteers, staff and Board members to deliver program and initiatives to a variety of stakeholders and publics.

Before joining the Council on Aging, Roch served as Program Coordinator, Alumni Benefits and Services with the uOttawa Alumni Association. During this time, he developed an interest in fundraising which led him to positions with the Montfort Foundation and most recently the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services. He is currently enrolled in the Fundraising Management certificate program at Algonquin College.

Director of Education

Tom Kelly joined the Council on Aging of Ottawa (COA) in January 2023 as the Director of Education. Prior to joining the COA, Tom was the Training Administrator for Psychiatric Survivors of Ottawa (PSO). He brings more than 20 years of experience working with diverse age groups in the mental health and addictions systems of care.

Throughout his career, Tom has had the opportunity to work with many CEO’s, Senior Management staff, front-line staff, community members and other stakeholders.

As the Director of Education, Tom will focus primarily on the development, organization, and delivery of the Smart Aging Program as well as providing support to other educational and advocacy events. Such programming will be directed to older adults throughout the city of Ottawa including isolated older adults and other older adults at risk in both official languages.

With over 20 years of experience in the public mental health and addictions field and having worked with private companies and government agencies, Tom was responsible for providing technical assistance to different agencies and organizations across different systems of care. His experience includes coaching and training staff in the use of strength-based and person-centered planning principles.

He has designed and developed training and presentations for national, regional and local conferences on topics including mental health, wellness, suicide prevention, peer support, resiliency, recovery and trauma informed care speaking to over 500 audiences across North America reaching more than 15,000 people.

Tom is a Certified Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Trainer and a Certified Advanced Level WRAP Facilitator.

Depuis janvier 2023, Tom Kelly est directeur de l’Éducation au Conseil sur le vieillissement (CSV) d’Ottawa (COA). Avant son arrivée au CSV, Tom était administrateur de la Formation pour le groupe Psychiatric Survivors of Ottawa (PSO). Il a accumulé plus de 20 ans d’expérience en interventions auprès de divers groupes d’âge dans les systèmes de soins pour les personnes aux prises avec des problèmes de santé mentale et de dépendance.

Durant sa carrière, Tom a eu l’occasion de travailler avec de nombreux PDG, cadres de gestion supérieure, intervenants de première ligne, membres de la communauté et autres intervenants.

En sa qualité de directeur de l’Éducation, Tom se concentrera surtout l’élaboration, l’organisation et l’exécution du programme Vieillir allumé, en plus d’appuyer d’autres activités éducatives et de défense des intérêts. Cette programmation visera, dans les deux langues officielles, les personnes aînées d’Ottawa, y compris celles qui sont isolées ou vivent en situation de risque.

Durant ses 20 ans de carrière et plus dans le domaine de la santé mentale publique et des dépendances auprès de sociétés privées et d’organismes gouvernementaux, Tom a été chargé d’assurer un soutien technique à divers organismes et organisations dans différents systèmes de soins. Il a notamment encadré et formé des employés dans l’application des principes de planification basés sur les forces et centrés sur la personne.

Il a conçu et élaboré des programmes de formation et des présentations pour des conférences nationales, régionales et locales sur des sujets comme la santé mentale, le mieux-être, la prévention du suicide, le soutien par les pairs, la résilience, le rétablissement et les soins sensibles au traumatisme; il est intervenu auprès de plus de 500 publics en Amérique du Nord, rejoignant ainsi plus de 15 000 personnes.

Tom est agent de formation accrédité en intervention non violente en situation d’urgence et facilitateur accrédité au niveau avancé du programme WRAP – le Plan d’action de rétablissement et de mieux-être.

If you read Terri’s biography on the COA website, you will note that she has earned a doctorate in public policy and has many years of work experience internationally, which helped her to develop a variety of methodological design and leadership skills. The biography does not tell you how much of a difference Terri White Lobsinger has made in the lives of seniors.

Terri and her husband, John, spent many years working overseas. Her family, including their three children, benefited from the exposure to various cultures and local traditions in Kenya, Tanzania, and Bangladesh. Once back in Ottawa, and after the children “flew the nest”, Terri joined the COA as a volunteer. Driven by her desire to help seniors in the community, Terri joined the COA Board of Directors and accepted the challenge of chairing the Health Issues Committee (HIC). The committee consists of representatives from municipal and provincial health care and social service agencies as well as private enterprises.

Terri’s background in health policy and research as well as her leadership skills have proven to be a natural fit for the mandate of this committee. One of Terri’s first tasks was to oversee the development and launch of a new project, “Take Charge of Your Health” (TCOYH). Terri quickly saw that such a project, driven by a peer-learning approach, could help improve health literacy among seniors.

An interactive group of seniors, led by a volunteer facilitator, discussed various aspects of the aging process. Through Terri’s commitment, TCOYH was successfully delivered over a three-year period and involved over 500 volunteers and senior participants. She ensured that the workshops were located in city-wide venues accessible to seniors from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

While the funding for TCOYH workshops wrapped up in 2017, Terri continues to promote TCOYH and seniors’ health literacy at every opportunity. Terri continues to provide value advice to the COA Board on health policy and other issues. Terri continues to lead the important work of the HIC focused on other important senior health issues, notably those related to long-term care. She has established an ad hoc committee to consider how the COA can lend its voice to advocate for our vulnerable senior population as they transition to long-term care homes.

With her commitment and energy, Terri has succeeded in making a real difference in the lives of seniors.

2017 Recipient

Kathy has a long list of community organizations and committees where she has been actively engaged as a volunteer. Since she retired they include:

• Twenty-three years as President of the Copeland Park Community Alliance (CPCA), ending in 2011. This alliance was formed in response to development in the Copeland Park Community. The CPCA and the Council on Aging recently worked together to highlight areas that needed improvement to ensure the “Senior Friendliness” of Baseline Rapid Transit.

• Past- President of Unitarian Church and presently chair of the Personnel committee at the church. She is also a Governor on the Board of Unitarian House and chairs their Fundraising Committee. Unitarian House is an organization with a long-standing reputation in the Ottawa area, and beyond, for quality seniors’ living.

• Vice-President and Fundraising Chair for Victoria Quilts Canada. Victoria Quilts Canada volunteers provide hand-made quilts for people living with cancer across Canada.

• Member of the May Court Club of Ottawa and presently the chair of the “Munch and Learn Program” that provides food for after-four programs in 6 Community Houses in Ottawa. Under their School Literacy program they provide volunteers for the school boards In Ottawa to read to students in the kindergarten programs. They also host fundraising projects for this program. This year they are hosting a “High Tea” in September.

• Also has been responsible for one of the “Homes for the Holidays” tours in November to raise money for Hospice Care Ottawa.
Kathy has always played a key role in connecting people, committees and organizations with similar aspirations of improving the community for seniors and, as a result, all members of the community.

Kathy’s experience and dedication have benefited the Council on Aging of Ottawa in numerous ways. She started on the Board of the COA in 2006 and served as President from 2011 to 2013. From 2008 to 2016, she served as the Chair of the COA’s Resources and Development Committee, which is responsible for many fundraising successes. One excellent example is the Art Gala held at the Irish Embassy, which in its first year brought in over $27,000 from paintings donated by Kathy’s husband Keith Yach and his good friend Eric Martin and in two subsequent years brought in close to $20,000 more. In her role as past president, Kathy has recruited many members that now sit on the COA Board. Kathy simply seems to know everyone in the city and has very persuasive powers in soliciting their support on anything she does. We would not be the excellent organization we are today without Kathy’s contributions.

Most of all, she was generous in sharing her wisdom and experience. For those who know her well, you listened carefully when Kathy started by saying, “Let me tell you a little story.” She was about to share a pearl of wisdom. We hope to continue to receive many more pearls of wisdom in the future. Thank you Kathy for everything!

Claire introduced routines and work plans covering all volunteer duties both for the individual members on the committee and for their duties at COA events. The latter included Lunch & Learns, fund raising and educational events, the Spring Luncheon & silent auction and the AGM. Claire also established a protocol for new volunteers, which included an interview and orientation, and developed special roles that a volunteer might take on, such as helping with translations, or choosing to work on the preparation for events or other duties.

This past year found the role of the volunteers so expanded that Claire established a separate Volunteer Circle and became its first Chair. Claire served on the Spirituality Conference Committee and the Resources & Development Committee. She also volunteered numerous hours in the office assisting with various administrative responsibilities.

Claire spent many more hours on the job than any previous Chair. She spent days on the job rather than hours, and at times it appeared to many of us that she was at the COA nearly every working day. Claire went “above and beyond the call of duty”, but never complained. Her cheerful energy, effective leadership, and attention to detail inspired us all, while her friendly personality made working as a volunteer at the COA both worthwhile and a lot of fun. She is most professional yet warm in working with everyone – presenters, sponsors, volunteers, board members and office staff. She has a wonderful sense of humour and is not rattled when challenges arise. She calmly makes the decision required and follows through.

The Council on Aging of Ottawa has benefitted greatly over the past few years from Claire’s support and her generous donation of her time, her talents and her resources. We wish you the best in your future endeavours. Thank you so much Claire!

Dianne Breton is an active and exceptional volunteer, committed to improving the quality of life for seniors in our community. She is a remarkable team leader, and a dedicated and responsible person.

Her unfailing attention to detail and commitment to finishing a task have benefitted and inspired everyone who has come in contact with her over the years.

Since joining the COA Board in 2002 Dianne has held numerous positions including Vice-President, Secretary, and Chair of the Members.com Committee (now the Education and Events Committee). She has also been involved on the hiring and nominating committees for staff and Board.

2017 Recipient

Tara has increased awareness and involvement in ethno-cultural seniors issues, making presentations and working in Coalitions such as the Ottawa Ethnocultural Coalition. CNSP was part of a pilot project which resulted in increased funding to address emotional health and PTSD issues for other immigrant communities. Importantly she has provided opportunities for able seniors and young people to volunteer with this community. In 2016, she started an innovative summer project, training high school students to support the seniors with social activities, while developing leadership and communication skills to advocate for better supports for refugees. Tara has a great spirit of giving and sharing and has gone above and beyond for many years in serving this otherwise unserved community.

Sound overly ambitious? Not for someone with Bill’s inventive spark and astounding track record. His recent very personal experiences are now driving him to find communications solutions on a global scale.
Almost three years ago, at the age of 90, Bill became a volunteer at Bruyère Saint-Vincent Hospital in Ottawa. As a member of the assistive devices team, he is helping develop a series of devices allowing patients with many physical, cognitive, and vocal problems to communicate.

He speaks with great compassion of “the cruelty of solitary confinement as horrible as anyone can imagine” when describing a patient paralyzed for 10 years, unable to communicate, unable to breathe or swallow. With the help of a $15,000 computer, the ingenuity of Bill Dawson, and the technical expertise of the team, this particular patient was able to go on the internet, reconnect with family and friends through emails, access library resources. She accomplished all of this, limited to the use of her thumbs -the right for the call button. With her left thumb she could laboriously trigger the spelling of words, selecting letters from an alphabet constantly scrolling across computer screen in front of her. When her thumb became too weak to press the spring to select letters, Bill and the team modified the device so that she just had to cross a beam of light with her thumb, freeing her to write volumes of poetry. “She wrote the most beautiful poem on the miracle of giving voice to someone in her situation” says Bill.

Another isolated, chronically ill patient uses a small portable computer Bill bought her and her nose to create and edit photo albums of her grandchildren. Only able to move her head, she has learned to align her nose with the crosshairs of a camera installed on the computer in order to make selections on a keyboard onscreen. “She is now very efficient with it and spends hours rearranging photos. Her day is full.” says Bill and smiles. “When she first got this set up two and a half years ago, she had problems with the hospital, because she wouldn’t go to sleep.”

And now Bill, students from Carleton University, and the team from Bruyère Saint Vincent Hospital are working on a prototype of an assistive device that will allow other ill and isolated individuals to connect to the outside world by connecting a flat screen tv and as many as nine inputs. Accessibility, adaptability and affordability are top priorities for this tool which Bill and the team from Bruyère and Carleton expect to showcase at the August conference of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC) to be held in Toronto. ISAAC is an organization working to improve the lives of children and adults with complex communication needs. The Ottawa team is currently creating the demonstration model to be tested in August from motherboards and 3D printed boxes. Their aim is nothing less than “give communication of different kinds, mostly through computers, to people with the most devastating deficiencies in their body -physical, visual auditory – and to have the world the world at their fingertips at a very affordable price.”

Eleanor is a most worthy recipient of this First Annual Service to Seniors Award, based on both the devoted personal care she has provided to many individual seniors as well as the significant work that she has carried out on behalf of seniors throughout Ottawa, through her work with the Champlain Region Family Councils Network, the Family Councils of the Glebe Centre and the Garry J Armstrong Home as well as leadership or membership on various committees and organizations addressing seniors’ issues.

Si vous lisez la notice biographique de Terri sur le site Web du CSV, vous apprendrez qu’elle est titulaire d’un doctorat en politiques publiques et qu’elle compte de nombreuses années d’expérience de travail à l’étranger, ce qui lui a permis d’acquérir tout un éventail de compétences en conception de méthodologies et en direction. Cette notice biographique ne mentionne toutefois pas à quel point son travail a contribué à l’amélioration des conditions de vie des aînés.

Terri et son mari, John, ont travaillé pendant de nombreuses années au Kenya, en Tanzanie et au Bangladesh. Tous deux et leurs trois enfants ont ainsi bénéficié d’une exposition à diverses cultures et traditions locales. Une fois de retour à Ottawa, et après que ses enfants eurent « quitté le nid », Terri s’est jointe au CSV comme bénévole. Motivée par le désir d’aider les aînés de sa collectivité, elle a intégré le Conseil d’administration du CSV et a accepté de relever un défi : présider le Comité de la santé. Ce dernier réunit des représentants d’agences municipales et provinciales de soins de santé et de services sociaux ainsi que d’entreprises privées.

Les antécédents de Terri en recherche et en élaboration de politiques relatives à la santé ainsi que ses aptitudes de chef de file ont fait d’elle une candidate toute désignée pour diriger le Comité. L’une de ses premières tâches de Terri consistait à superviser l’élaboration et le lancement d’un nouveau projet : Prenez votre santé en main. Elle s’est rapidement rendu compte qu’une telle initiative, fondée sur l’apprentissage par les pairs, pouvait renforcer la littératie en santé chez les aînés. L’idée derrière le projet est de permettre à des groupes d’aînés d’avoir des échanges interactifs sur divers aspects du vieillissement sous la direction d’un animateur bénévole. Grâce au dévouement de Terri, le projet a été offert pendant plus de trois ans, et plus de 500 bénévoles et personnes âgées y ont pris part. Elle s’est assurée que les ateliers seraient offerts aux quatre coins de la ville à des installations accessibles aux aînés de toutes les couches socioéconomiques et de tous les horizons culturels. Bien que le financement des ateliers du projet ait pris fin en 2017, Terri a continué de faire connaître ce dernier et de sensibiliser le public à la littératie en santé des aînés à la moindre occasion.

À ce jour, elle continue de fournir au Conseil d’administration du CSV de précieux conseils sur les politiques relatives à la santé et sur d’autres questions. Terri dirige toujours les importants travaux du Comité de la santé axés sur des problèmes de santé majeurs qui touchent les aînés, notamment ceux liés aux soins de longue durée. De plus, elle a mis sur pied un comité spécial responsable d’examiner la manière dont le CSV pourrait exprimer son appui en défendant les intérêts des personnes âgées vulnérables d’Ottawa au fur et à mesure que ces dernières poursuivent leur transition vers la vie en résidence de soins de longue durée.

Par son dévouement et son énergie, Terri a réussi à transformer véritablement la vie des aînés.

En qualité de bénévole, Kathy a travaillé activement auprès d’un grand nombre d’organismes communautaires et de comités. Depuis qu’elle a pris sa retraite en 2005, Kathy a accompli de nombreuses réalisations. En voici quelques-unes :

• Elle a présidé la Copeland Park Community Alliance (CPCA) durant 23 ans avant de quitter l’organisme en 2011. Ce dernier a été formé en réponse au développement survenu dans la communauté de Copeland Park. La CPCA et le Conseil du vieillissement ont récemment collaboré pour relever les secteurs auxquels il fallait apporter des améliorations pour rendre le couloir Baseline de la voie rapide pour autobus plus convivial à l’égard des aînés.
• Elle est une ancienne présidente de l’Unitarian Church, dont elle dirige actuellement le comité du personnel. Elle siège en outre au conseil des gouverneurs de la Maison unitarienne d’Ottawa et préside le comité du financement de l’organisme. La Maison unitarienne jouit d’une solide réputation dans la région d’Ottawa et au‑delà de cette dernière en ce qui a trait à l’amélioration des conditions de vie des aînés.
• Elle a été élue vice-présidente de Victoria Quilts Canada et directrice de son comité du financement. Les bénévoles de Victoria Quilts Canada offrent des courtepointes faites à la main à des personnes atteintes du cancer aux quatre soins du Canada.
• Elle siège au May Court Club of Ottawa et en préside actuellement le programme Munch and Learn, qui fournit des collations aux fins d’activités offertes après l’école à six maisons communautaires d’Ottawa. Grâce à ce programme d’acquisition de compétences linguistiques, des bénévoles sont détachés auprès de conseils scolaires d’Ottawa et font la lecture à des élèves du jardin. Une collecte de fonds est aussi organisée à l’appui du programme. Cette année, l’activité de financement sera un thé d’après‑midi et aura lieu en septembre.
• Elle s’est occupée en novembre de l’une des tournées de résidences « Homes for the Holidays » visant à recueillir des fonds pour La Maison des soins palliatifs d’Ottawa.

Kathy a toujours joué un rôle clé pour ce qui est de mettre en relation des personnes, des comités et des organismes aspirant à créer une collectivité plus conviviale à l’égard des aînés et, par le fait même, de tous ses résidents.

Le Conseil sur le vieillissement d’Ottawa a bénéficié de son expérience et son dévouement à de nombreux égards. Elle a fait son entrée au conseil d’administration en 2006 et a assuré la présidence de 2011 à 2013. De 2008 à 2016, elle a dirigé le Comité des ressources et du développement, qui assure la réussite de nombreuses activités de financement du Conseil. Le Gala des arts tenu à la résidence de l’ambassadeur de l’Irlande au Canada en est un parfait exemple. L’attention qu’elle porte aux moindres détails et sa détermination à finir une tâche ont aidé et inspiré toutes les personnes qui l’ont rencontrée au fil des ans.

Depuis son arrivée au conseil d’administration du CSV en 2002, Dianne a occupé de nombreux postes, notamment celui de vice-présidente, de secrétaire et de présidente du Comité membres.com (maintenant le Comité de l’éducation et des événements). Elle a également participé aux comités de recrutement et de nomination du personnel et du conseil d’administration.

Tara Upreti a joué un rôle majeur dans la création, en 2006, de l’organisme Canada-Nepal Solidarity for Peace (CNSP). Depuis, elle travaille bénévolement auprès de personnes âgées isolées. C’est plus précisément à des immigrants népalais et à des réfugiés bhoutanais qu’elle apporte son soutien. Nombre d’eux ont subi, pendant plus de 20 ans, les conditions difficiles des camps de réfugiés et présentent aujourd’hui un syndrome de stress post-traumatique (SSPT) ainsi que d’autres problèmes graves de santé mentale. Ils ne connaissent rien du monde moderne, un grand nombre d’entre eux ne savent ni lire ni écrire dans leur propre langue et aucun d’entre eux ne parle français ni anglais. Tara a accompagné plus de 90 de ces réfugiés d’âge avancé. Elle les a aidés à s’établir ici, à résoudre des questions d’ordre juridique et à obtenir des soins de santé; elle les a conduits à des rendez-vous et leur a servi d’interprète. Elle a également mis sur pied des activités intergénérationnelles, un groupe de soutien se réunissant tous les deux mois ainsi qu’une formation à l’utilisation du transport en commun grâce à laquelle les aînés apprennent à se déplacer en toute autonomie dans la ville. Elle a aussi donné des présentations et a œuvré auprès d’organismes comme Ottawa Ethnocultural Coalition afin de sensibiliser la population et mobiliser l’engagement de cette dernière à l’égard des problèmes vécus par les aînés issus de communautés ethnoculturelles. CNSP a participé à un projet pilote qui s’est soldé par l’augmentation du financement alloué aux questions de santé émotionnelle et de SSPT touchant les immigrants d’autres communautés. Il importe aussi de noter que Tara a offert à des jeunes personnes ainsi qu’à des aînés aptes à le faire l’occasion de travailler bénévolement auprès de cette clientèle. En 2016, elle a démarré un projet estival novateur consistant à former des élèves du secondaire afin que ces derniers puissent accompagner des personnes âgées dans leurs activités sociales tout en renforçant leurs aptitudes à diriger et à communiquer pour plaider en faveur d’un plus grand soutien aux réfugiés. Tara est animée d’une immense générosité et se dévoue corps et âme depuis de nombreuses années à un groupe de personnes autrement laissées pour compte.

Bill Dawson mérite pleinement ce deuxième prix annuel du Service auprès des aînés, compte tenu du leadership et de l’innovation dont il a fait preuve ainsi que de l’incidence profonde et unique qu’il a eue sur les plus vulnérables de la société. Investi d’une mission, Bill Dawson se dévoue pour bâtir un monde meilleur dans lequel  les personnes ayant des maladies chroniques ou complexes peuvent s’épanouir. Il est compatissant, brillant, dévoué et charmant. Ce sont ces qualités qui lui permettent d’établir des liens avec certaines des personnes les plus vulnérables de notre société.

Eleanor Ryan est la récipiendaire la plus méritante de cette première récompense annuelle soulignant le service donné auprès des aînés, basée à la fois sur les soins personnels dévoués qu’elle a donnés à plusieurs aînés de même qu’au travail significatif qu’elle a produit pour le compte des aînés partout dans Ottawa soit par son service , son leadership, son innovation et sa défense des droits des aînés. Eleanor possède à son crédit une longue expérience de bénévolat. Ses activités s’étendent du service aux grandes organisations nationales tels la Société Royale du Commonwealth du Canada, le Conseil d’administration de Centraide Ottawa et le projet 4000 de même que son bénévolat au sein de petits groupes de la communauté comme le Conseil de la ligue féminine catholique dans les églises de sa paroisse. Depuis sa retraite, elle dédie de plus en plus de son temps aux soins physiques des aînés d’Ottawa s’engageant pour le compte des aînés et s’assurant que leurs intérêts soient considérés au sein des résidences de soins de longue durée, à Ottawa, et dans la région de Champlain. Elle a aussi manifesté son leadership sur plusieurs comités et organisations en soulevant des questions sur les problèmes concernant les aînés comme Champlain Dementia Network, Champlain LHN’s Emergency Department – Alternate Level of Care Committee et plus récemment le Ministère de la santé et des Soins de longue durée, Long-Term Care Stakeholder Liaison Committee. Committee Engagement

Michael (Mike) Powers joins The Council on Aging after 40+ years of business development successes in the Financial Services, Economic Development, and Not-for-profit sectors. A creative-thinking executive, Mike has introduced new clients and established new markets across Canada and the UK. Mike is an accomplished networker, developing opportunities in widely diverse sectors as needed for the organization's success. His 30+ year involvement in the volunteer sector has seen Mike serving as a board member/event organizer/treasurer with after-school programs, single parents, tennis community, young offenders programs, municipal parks, recreation, and hospitals, and as a volunteer sports coach. He is a Dad to three amazing daughters and grandfather to the four delights of his senior life. Dubbed urban explorer, he loves to explore cities and wander rural areas. It is with notable enthusiasm that he joins the COA Board!

Secretary

Chantal is a highly motivated healthcare professional with a strong background in public health, serving vulnerable populations. She brings over 20 years of experience as a dental hygienist, including teaching at La Cité Collégiale. Chantal has recently completed her bachelor’s degree in health administration, propelling her career toward long-term care administration. Having recently accepted the position of Manager of Mental Health Promotion and Volunteers with the Canadian Mental Health Association Champlain East, she eagerly looks forward to applying her skills to further promote health in her community and to contribute to the efforts of the COA Board. In her leisure time, she is an avid traveler, an independent contractor of her own travel agency, and a proud mother of two teenage children.

Secretaire

Chantal est une professionnelle de la santé hautement motivée avec une solide expérience en santé publique, au service des populations vulnérables. Elle apporte plus de 20 ans d’expérience en tant qu’hygiéniste dentaire, y compris en tant qu’enseignante à La Cité Collégiale. Chantal a récemment obtenu son baccalauréat en administration de la santé, propulsant sa carrière vers l’administration des soins de longue durée. Ayant récemment accepté le poste de Gestionnaire de la Promotion de la Santé Mentale et des Volontaires avec l’Association Canadienne pour la Santé Mentale Champlain Est, elle est enthousiaste d’appliquer ses compétences pour promouvoir davantage la santé dans sa communauté et contribuer aux efforts du conseil de la COA. Education

Avant de passer dix ans comme conseillère en politique scientifique à divers paliers de l’administration fédérale, y compris auprès du ministre des Ressources naturelles, Jenny Murphy a été scientifique, spécialisée en observation terrestre. Retraitée, elle a suivi le cours pour enseigner l’anglais langue seconde et a donné, pendant neuf ans, un cours d’un mois en communications en langue anglaise à des guides en randonnée de haute montagne en formation au Népal. En juin 2023, après six ans d’études à l’Université Carleton, elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en humanités. Comme bénévole, elle a été Grande sœur et elle a aussi lu et enregistré des articles de journaux pour les aveugles au moyen du système d’empreinte vocale (maintenant AMI). Elle est membre fondatrice d’un organisme canadien de charité enregistré offrant des bourses à des étudiants en géomatique au Népal. En 2016, elle a écrit ses mémoires et elle continue à écrire des histoires dans le cadre d’un groupe de rédaction de mémoires. Elle a été rameuse et kayakeuse compétitive pendant 50 ans et elle est membre de Toastmasters International depuis 2021.

Education

Before spending ten years as the Science Policy Advisor for various levels of federal government including the Minister of Natural Resources, Jenny Murphy was a scientist specializing in Earth Observation. After retirement, she took the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) course and taught a one-month English communications course to female trainee Trekking Guides in Nepal for nine years. In June 2023, she completed six years of study at Carleton University, graduating with a Bachelor of Humanities degree. As a volunteer, she has been a Big Sister, and she read and recorded newspapers for the blind with Voiceprint (now AMI). She is the Founding Member of a registered Canadian charity providing scholarships to geomatics students in Nepal. She wrote her memoirs in 2016 and continues writing stories as part of a Memoir Writing Group. She was a competitive rower and kayaker for fifty years and she has been a member of Toastmasters International since 2021.

Dans sa pratique du droit, Émilie se concentre surtout sur la représentation « ad litem » dans le secteur de la santé, y compris la représentation des hôpitaux publics et de leurs employés dans les poursuites pour faute professionnelle en matière médicale. Elle comparaît en cour et devant des tribunaux administratifs, y compris les suivants :
• Cour de petites créances;
• Cour supérieure de justice;
• Cour divisionnaire;
• Commission du consentement et de la capacité;
• Tribunal des droits de la personne de l’Ontario;
• Enquêtes du coroner en Ontario

Émilie travaille directement avec des professionnels et organismes de la santé à des dossiers de gestion du risque liés au droit de la santé mentale, à l’intervention en cas d’événements indésirables, à des questions touchant les subrogés, la planification des congés et des aspects réglementaires.

Parfaitement à l’aise en anglais et en français, Émilie travaille dans les deux langues officielles. Elle a fait son stage en droit auprès du cabinet BLG avant de s’y joindre comme associée. Durant ses études, elle a été chercheuse universitaire auprès du Global Strategy Lab et elle a travaillé pour les Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada et l’Association médicale canadienne.

Émilie’s law practice focuses on litigation in the health sector, including representing public hospitals and their employees in medical malpractice litigation. She appears in court and before administrative tribunals, including:
• Small Claims Court;
• Superior Court of Justice;
• Divisional Court;
• Consent and Capacity Board;
• Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario; and
• Coroner’s Inquests in Ontario

Émilie works directly with healthcare professionals and organizations on risk management issues related to mental health law, responding to adverse events, issues involving substitute decision-makers, discharge planning, and regulatory issues.

Fluent in English and French, she practises in both official languages. Émilie articled with BLG before joining as an associate. During her studies, she was a research fellow with the Global Strategy Lab and worked at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Canadian Medical Association.

Committee Engagement

Michael (Mike) Powers se joint au Conseil sur le vieillissement après plus de 40 ans de réussites en développement d’entreprises dans les services financiers, le développement économique et le secteur sans but lucratif.  Cadre en pensée créatrice, Mike a dépisté des nouveaux clients et établi des nouveaux marchés au Canada et au Royaume-Uni. Réseauteur accompli, il a développé des débouchés dans une grande variété de secteurs pour assurer le succès de l’organisation. Au cours de ses 30 ans et plus d’action dans le secteur du bénévolat, Mike a notamment été membre de conseils d’administration, organisateur d’événements  et trésorier pour des programmes parascolaires, les chefs de famille monoparentale, le milieu du tennis, des programmes pour jeunes délinquants, les parcs, loisirs et hôpitaux municipaux en plus d’être entraîneur sportif bénévole. Il est le père de trois filles remarquables et heureux grand-papa de quatre enfants chéris. Surnommé explorateur urbain, il adore explorer les villes et se promener dans les régions rurales. C’est avec grand enthousiasme qu’il se joint au conseil d’administration du CSV!

Co-Chair, Age-Friendly Housing Committee

Grace Welch retired in 2007 from the University of Ottawa where she held positions as the Associate University Librarian, Map Librarian, and Head of Systems. She also worked at the National Library of Canada. She was active in the Association of Canadian Map Libraries and Archives for over 25 years holding positions as President, Vice President, and Treasurer. She served as Vice-Chair of the Ontario Geographic Names Board between 2007-2017 and served for six years on the Geographic Names Board of Canada. Since 2010, she has been involved with the Champlain Region Family Council Network which helps support family councils in long-term care and advocates for improvements in quality of life and care for residents. She was a member of the Advisory Panel to the 2020 Ministry of Long-Term Care Staffing Study. She is a member of several patient advisory committees looking at the health and well-being of older adults including starting with the COA in 2013 with the Events and Education, Health Issues, and Housing Committees.

En 2007, Grace Welch a pris sa retraite de l’Université d’Ottawa, où elle a occupé les postes de bibliothécaire associée de l’université, cartothécaire et cheffe des systèmes.  Elle a aussi travaillé à la Bibliothèque nationale du Canada.  Pendant plus de 25 ans, elle a participé activement aux affaires de l’Association des cartothèques et archives cartographiques du Canada, où elle a occupé les postes de présidente, vice-présidente et trésorière. Elle a été vice-présidente du conseil de la Commission de toponymie de l’Ontario de 2007 à 2017 et a siégé pendant six ans au conseil de la Commission de toponymie du Canada. Depuis 2010, elle est impliquée dans le Champlain Region Family Council Network, qui aide à appuyer les conseils d’aide à la famille pour les soins de longue durée et qui prône l’amélioration de la qualité de vie et de soins pour les résidents. Elle a fait partie du conseil consultatif  pour l’Étude sur les effectifs des foyers de soins de longue durée menée par le ministère en 2020.Elle a aussi siégé à plusieurs comités consultatifs sur les soins aux patients se penchant sur les enjeux de la santé et du bien-être des personnes âgées, y compris, dès 2013, aux comités sur les événements et l’éducation, la santé et le logement du CSV.

Lead, Home and Community Care Working Group

Audrey Jacques has over fifteen years of experience in the federal public sector. She has worked in communications and marketing as well as on a number of social policy files, including the delivery of services and programs to Canadian veterans and issues surrounding gender-based violence. Audrey has a bachelor’s degree in communications and is currently completing a Master's degree in Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa. Audrey has been involved in her community for many years and undertakes her role on the Home and Community Care Working Group with great energy and enthusiasm.

Audrey Jacques a plus de quinze ans d’expérience dans le secteur public fédéral. Impliquée dans sa communauté depuis de nombreuses années, elle entreprend son rôle auprès du Groupe de travail sur les soins communautaires et à domicile avec beaucoup d’énergie et d’enthousiasme.
